Anthropomorphic SEVERED thriller book cover holding a pink parasol while facing a charging black bull in a bullfighting arena.

This cover is available as a premade design

SEVERED was a typographic thriller premade book cover. Originally, he had a beautiful, perfectly smooth white surface. Not a scratch, wrinkle, or crack spoiled his appearance. The bold black lettering was perfectly balanced, and his minimalist thriller book cover design was immaculate.

Then he fell in love.

With a geisha.

She was beautiful. She made tea, smiled sweetly, and moved so gracefully that the book cover forgot what he wanted to say every time he looked at her.

Unfortunately, the geisha was evil.

Not spectacularly evil. She simply enjoyed making other people miserable.

One afternoon, they went to a bullfight.

The geisha ordered tea, but when it arrived, she found it too hot.

“I can’t drink this!”

“Wait for it to cool down,” suggested the book cover.

“Mind your own business.”

And with that, she poured the scalding tea water over the bull’s back.

The bull roared.

“Why did you do that?!” the book cover cried.

“I wanted to see how fast he could run.”

The bull turned and charged toward them.

The book cover immediately jumped in front of the geisha.

“Run, my love! I’ll hold him off!”

The geisha shoved her little pink parasol into his hand.

“Here. Maybe this will help.”

“But it’s a parasol!”

“Well, at least you won’t get sunstroke.”

And she ran away.

The book cover stood alone before the furious bull.

Everyone in the stands jumped to their feet. A woman began screaming, someone called an ambulance, and the matador crossed himself.

Nobody believed a book cover made of paper could survive such an attack.

“I DIDN’T POUR THE TEA ON YOU!” shouted the book cover.

“I KNOW!” bellowed the bull. “BUT SHE’S GONE!”

The bull charged.

At the last possible moment, the book cover jumped aside. The bull attacked again, and once more he dodged. During the third charge, he even managed to open the parasol.

The crowd went wild.

Ten minutes later, the bull was panting with exhaustion, while the book cover stood triumphantly in the middle of the arena.

Not a single scratch.

Later, he found the geisha drinking tea with another man.

“I saved your life,” said the book cover.

“I know.”

“I thought you’d be worried about me.”

“Why would I be? You’re obviously alive.”

“I love you.”

“That’s sweet. But I never loved you.”

The book cover froze.

Then came a faint cracking sound.

A thin fracture appeared across his perfectly white surface. Then another. Within seconds, entire pieces of his once-flawless cover began curling away.

The geisha watched with disapproval.

“What are you doing now?”

“I think you’ve broken my heart.”

“Don’t be so dramatic. You’re a thriller, after all.”

The book cover placed the pink parasol in front of her and walked away.

The next morning, he visited a bookbinder.

“Can you repair this?” he asked.

The bookbinder carefully examined the cracked cover.

“How did it happen?”

“I was in love.”

“I see. And the bull?”

“I escaped without a scratch.”

The bookbinder nodded.

“Typical.”

“Can you fix me?”

“Your heart? No. But I can repair your cover.”

“Will I look the way I used to?”

“No,” said the bookbinder. “But at least the cracks suit the thriller genre.”
